In today’s post, I’m showing you a variety of outdoor sofas, from contemporary, curved styles to more classic woven rattan designs.

With all the latest designs and gorgeous outdoor fabrics, I believe that an outdoor sofa should be as stylish as the one in your living room - just like the statement sofa here by leading furniture designer Ligne Roset. An outdoor sofa isn’t just functional; it’s a way to transform your terrace, patio or garden into a stylish outdoor space. I have recently bought a new one from OKA, and I spent hours researching the right model, balancing style with practicality. As it is visible from my dining room, I wanted something striking, modern and stylish, in keeping with the interior. But as it is on a windy balcony by the sea, it needed to be not just weather-resistant but extremely robust. Fed up with metal corroding and rattan breaking on past sofas, I chose the most durable combination: a teak and aluminium base with synthetic rope detailing.
Through the process of sourcing my own sofa, I discovered just how many different types of stylish sofas are available to help turn your outdoor area into an extension of your home. According to Magdalena Gierasinska, Head of Product and Displays at Barker and Stonehouse, the biggest outdoor living trend of 2026 is the blending together of indoor and outdoor spaces. “As boundaries between indoor and outdoor living are becoming increasingly blurred, garden furniture now mirrors interior design aesthetics, with pieces like wicker and rattan furniture adding warmth and texture to outdoor spaces. This creates cohesive environments that extend the comfort and style of the home into the garden – perfect for garden parties and outdoor entertaining,” she explains.
Before choosing an outdoor sofa, it’s important to think about how many people you want to seat and other ways you might want to use it. Size is a key factor. When I was choosing mine, I wanted a sofa that doubled up as a lounger or daybed and was long enough for me to stretch out comfortably. You also need to consider how durable it needs to be, particularly if the sofa is too heavy or large to bring indoors during winter. In this post, I will advise on what to look for in an outdoor sofa, the different materials to choose, how to care for it, and how to style it with other accessories for a stylish outdoor space. I’ll also share several different designs with you.
Classic rattan sofa with matching fire pit table
Here is a classic outdoor set-up that instantly makes you think of long summer days and a glass of wine on the terrace. Many outdoor sofas are part of a wider collection, often complete with matching chairs, side and coffee tables for a cohesive look. But what makes this furniture set particularly special is the coffee table with its built-in fire pit - which transforms the seating area into a sociable spot for entertaining while extending alfresco evenings well into the cooler nights.
The sofa itself is the Provence Rattan Corner Sofa by Barker and Stonehouse, which has a timeless look elevated beyond plain rattan furniture with a detailed woven pattern. According to Barker and Stonehouse, fire pit tables are not just reserved for large outdoor spaces, as even a compact design can be the perfect addition to a small patio, terrace or garden, adding warmth, atmosphere and a focal point for cosy evenings in the open air.

How do outdoor sofas differ from indoor sofas?
Where outdoor sofas were once limited to shiny acrylic finishes - often in a rather plain shade of dark green - today’s designs are far more sophisticated. Modern performance fabrics are made from textiles like linen and cotton and blended with a small amount of acrylic, giving them a more natural appearance. The frames, once metal, have evolved too and are now made from powder-coated aluminium or teak, which is considered one of the most durable woods for outdoors. While maintaining comfort and style, these sofas look and feel much closer to an indoor sofa but are weather-resistant to protect against rain, temperature changes and UV rays.
The upholstery or seat cushions differ from indoor sofa cushions as they are specifically designed to cope with the elements. Many now contain quick-dry foam inserts, which allow water to pass through a mesh base and drain away easily, making them practical for everyday outdoor use. While researching all my outdoor features, I have been amazed by how stylish outdoor fabrics have become. Nobody would ever guess that my Soho Home accent chair in my living room is actually from their outdoor range!
How to style your outdoor sofa
Treat your sofa as you would an indoor one by layering cushions, throws, rugs and lanterns to make the space feel stylish and inviting.
Layer cushions: There are so many gorgeous outdoor cushions available in every style imaginable that will add colour and your very own interior style to your outdoor sofa. Most are weather-resistant so you can leave them outdoors during good weather.
Add a throw: Although these are not in outdoor fabrics yet, a wool or linen throw adds softness and that indoor touch to your sofa whilst being perfect for cooler evenings.
Define the seating area with a rug: An outdoor rug will anchor the space and make it feel like an indoor room.
Place a plant pot: An attractive pot with an olive tree or flowers placed nearby the sofa will bring greenery and colour to the seating area.
Light up with a lantern: A lantern with real or faux candles looks stylish in the day and lights up the seating area at night, bringing in warmth and atmosphere.
Styling your sofa with striking accent cushions
I particularly love the combination of the off-white and burnt orange on the sofa pictured here, which is from the Bondi outdoor collection by Domkapa. When looking for an outdoor sofa, you’ll find that the seat cushions often come in neutral or off-white tones, which create the ideal base for styling cushions. A natural tone allows you to style your sofa in a way that reflects your interior, or alternatively opt for a completely different look such as vibrant colours or Mediterranean-inspired tones. I also have off-white seat and back cushions and have styled mine with teal accent cushions. What are outdoor sofas made of?
Aluminium: Outdoor sofas made from aluminium are generally more lightweight than wooden versions, making them easier to rearrange and store during winter. Aluminium is weather-resistant and less likely to rust than other metals. For added durability, aluminium frames are finished with a powder coating or marine-grade paint.
Wood: Teak is considered one of the most robust woods for outdoors as it is naturally resistant to moisture. It can be treated with teak oil to help replenish its colour and protect the surface. Other woods, such as acacia, are also commonly used for outdoor sofas.
Synthetic rattan, wicker and rope: Many outdoor sofas combine a wooden or aluminium frame with woven rattan, wicker, or rope detailing. These materials are now often made from hard-wearing synthetic materials designed to withstand UV rays and changing temperatures, while still retaining a natural appearance.
Seat and back cushions: The inner cores of base cushions are specifically designed to withstand the elements and are often made from quick-dry foam, which helps the foam dry out more easily after getting wet. The cushions are usually covered with weather-resistant fabric, which often includes polypropylene, polyester, acrylic and olefin fibres. These are designed to withstand strong UV rays and cope with outdoor conditions and temperature changes as they repel moisture, dry quickly and are resistant to mildew and mould.
Designer outdoor sofa in vibrant tones
The move away from purely functional garden furniture towards beautifully designed outdoor pieces couldn’t be more apparent than with this striking statement sofa designed by Carlo Colombo for Talenti. As one of the leading high-end outdoor furniture brands, they create outdoor collections that are as design-led as indoor furniture.
I particularly like the rich yellow tones paired with patterned accent cushions, which would instantly uplift any outdoor space. Even if you favour neutrals inside your home, don’t shy away from bolder colours outdoors; as you can see here, they can look stunning against greenery, wood, stone and other natural outdoor elements.

How to care for your outdoor sofa
Keep clean: Seat and back cushions are usually made from fabrics that are easy to clean with a damp cloth and mild soap. Even though the fabric is durable, it’s worth removing any marks immediately to prevent staining.
Store during winter if possible: During the winter months, especially in the UK and other cooler, wetter climates, if your sofa is not too heavy or large, store it in a dry, well-ventilated place such as a garage or shed.
Invest in a good quality cover: Perhaps the most important part of looking after your outdoor sofa is the cover you buy. This is not just for winter but also to protect it during heavy downpours. Make sure it fits correctly, so measure your sofa first. It’s better for it to be slightly larger than too small. Also, the quality is crucial. I can’t tell you how many I have bought that have claimed to be waterproof but weren’t. For my new sofa, I purchased a Turtle Life Garden Sofa Cover from Amazon that is heavy-duty and completely waterproof.
Styling your sofa next to coffee tables
This generous outdoor three-seater sofa has been paired with a stunning green marble-effect oval coffee table and a matching side table by Atkin and Thyme, creating a statement look on the terrace that feels much more like an interior room brought outdoors.
If you don’t have space for a coffee table, there are now so many attractive outdoor side tables available that not only provide somewhere to place your drink but also help give your patio or terrace a living room feel.
The outdoor sofa itself features a powder-coated aluminium frame in a soft sage green tone which blends beautifully with surrounding greenery and provides a strong and sturdy weather-resistant base.

Monochrome sofa set
To make a bold statement in your garden, I think a monochrome scheme like this one can look incredibly striking. This outdoor sofa and chairs by sofa.com do exactly that, balancing structure and comfort. Crafted from high-quality teak, the frame features elegant vertical slat detailing.
This sofa combines style with longevity. The contoured black cushions are made from highly durable foam, with removable covers available in Aquaclean outdoor fabrics, designed to cope with outdoor living while still looking chic. The range includes two sofa sizes and matching armchairs, pairing beautifully with coffee and side tables to help create a cohesive outdoor seating area.

Curved luxury rope outdoor sofa
This beautifully curved sofa proves just how much interior design trends have extended to outdoor furniture, although with a clever outdoor twist, as the frame features woven rope rather than the upholstered arms and back found on indoor models. Just like with indoor sofas, the curves give the design a more organic and contemporary feel.
This outdoor sofa by Talenti from Viva Lagoon is crafted from high-quality designer outdoor fabrics and luxury materials with exceptional attention to detail. Despite its deeply upholstered appearance, the cushions are made from quick-dry foam and are completely weatherproof, making it practical and stylish. The plush feel of the sofa is enhanced further with neutral accent cushions, creating a relaxed yet sophisticated look.

Contemporary outdoor sofa embracing the latest down-to-earth trends
This striking piece epitomises modern outdoor furniture and embraces the latest down-to-earth trends: This sofa from Juliette’s Interiors has unmistakable style and presence, bringing a design-led feel to the terrace.
The wraparound back and armrests, crafted entirely out of rope, blend seamlessly into the frame and give the sofa a contemporary yet timeless feel. I particularly like the way the sofa has been styled with a mixture of round and square cushions in complementary tones, which softens the overall look and adds another layer of interest and comfort to the sofa. So when you are choosing outdoor cushions for your sofa, it’s worth considering different shapes and sizes to make the arrangement look as considered as an indoor sofa.

Upholstered, stylish outdoor sofa
I almost couldn’t believe that this fully upholstered stylish sofa was actually designed for outdoors. Designs like this blur the lines between indoor and outdoor living. The Jae Greige Upholstered Outdoor Sofa from Rowen brings indoor luxury and style outside and, with its wide, rounded arms and deeply cushioned low-profile modular design, it’s everything you would expect from a design-led indoor sofa.
Despite being fully upholstered, this sofa is crafted from durable, weather-resistant fabric, designed specifically for outdoors. The soft greige tone - a blend of grey and beige - is neutral, so very versatile, and would work beautifully in almost any outdoor setting, whether placed on stone, wood or natural landscaping.

Versatile stripy outdoor sofa
This two-seater sofa immediately caught my eye, not only because of its stylish taupe and beige stripes, but also because of its incredibly versatile design. The set is actually composed of four lounge chairs that can easily be attached with Velcro to create two good-sized two-seater sofas.
I believe versatility is key to making the most of your outdoor space. Depending on whether you are entertaining guests or want to stretch out and relax, this kind of set-up is ideal. It gives you great flexibility while still looking stylish.

Wooden corner sofa with dark-toned
cushions
This spacious contemporary garden sofa brings comfort and character to any patio or decking area. The generous corner design combines woven rope detailing with rustic light brushed acacia wood, creating a look that feels both modern and relaxed.
The deep navy cushions provide inviting comfort for up to five people, making the seating both sociable and practical for outdoor living. Styled alongside a coffee table also crafted from acacia wood, and layered with cushions and a throw, it’s perfect for laid-back afternoons and effortless outdoor entertaining. A corner sofa like this creates a defined outdoor living space and feels more like an extension of the home.

Outdoor sofa set defined with a rug
This sofa beautifully blends classic with modern. This is The Willowbrook Sofa by Daals, together with its matching chairs, it features a lattice weave in rattan that gives the collection a timeless appeal. What makes this garden set-up even more special is the rug. It’s hard to just pop a sofa in the garden and expect it to instantly look like an outdoor living room. Of course, coffee tables, side tables and chairs all help to create more of a room-like feel, but an outdoor rug is one of the key outdoor styling pieces to transform the area. It helps define the seating zone, while visually pulling all the furniture together.
This hand-braided rug works perfectly here, not only because of its natural texture, but also because of its size. Ideally, the front legs of the sofa and chairs should sit on the rug, while the back legs can remain on the ground, as this helps anchor the whole arrangement. Bouclé goes outdoors
Bouclé has been a huge interior trend and is now a modern classic, but I was still amazed to see it making its way outdoors. This is the Natural Salvador Corner Sofa by Next which, with its bouclé cushions and curved shape, feels both on-trend and sophisticated, making it a stylish addition to any patio, terrace or garden.
The word bouclé, which actually means ‘curled’ or ‘looped’, refers to the tiny loops in the yarn that give the fabric that distinctive textured look, bringing warmth and softness from the indoors to the outside and making it even further removed from traditional garden furniture. While indoor bouclé is often made of natural fibres like wool, linen and cotton, outdoor-style bouclé is made from water-resistant fabrics such as solution-dyed acrylic, polypropylene, polyester blends and olefin fibres, combining style and comfort with durability.
