Smart, stunning and seriously talented - meet German entrepreneur and interior designer Katie Fischer, pictured here in her living room. Founder of her own home décor brand, Katie has been featured in some of the most prestigious interior magazines, including AD, Elle Decoration and Homes & Gardens, thanks to her beautifully curated, timeless designs.

Katie trained as both a computer scientist and an interior architect, giving her a rare mix of logic and creative vision - from understanding the bones of a building (proportion, flow and light) to her instinctive talent for styling with carefully curated pieces, making whatever she displays look effortless. With a huge following on Instagram, she went on to launch her interior design blog EditionNoire in 2016, which quickly attracted interest from around the globe. As her audience grew, so did demand for her signature aesthetic - a look she describes as warm minimalism with architectural structure and character. In 2022, this vision expanded into a curated online store - Katie Fischer - featuring hand-picked unique pieces from family-run businesses.

I first spotted Katie’s interiors when I was sourcing vases and I immediately fell for her refined European approach to timeless interiors. For me, her collection and the interiors in her home have that Dutch/Belgian/French feel - with antique lamps on plinths, rustic coffee tables and stools, and a calm, neutral palette. Together with her gorgeous décor and interior design skills, what also made me want to feature Katie was the way she’s created a beautiful individual style that’s unmistakably her own.

Mixing antique, handcrafted and vintage finds, along with a distinctive selection of home décor, lighting, furniture and one-of-a-kind pieces, Katie’s collection is not about cheap reproductions; it’s a carefully curated selection of quality-driven products with history and individuality. "Mass-produced furniture is everywhere," explains Katie, whose pieces elevate both modern and rustic interiors. "Finding something special and truly high-quality takes a long time."

As well as styling heroes like antique lamps and vases, Katie also sources striking artefacts, like the set of three handcrafted iron bells pictured here. Because they are so original, these bells make a stylish statement and add a sense of atmosphere to a room.

Alongside running her online store and designing for others, Katie has been busy reimagining almost every room in her home, creating interiors that feel both intentional and deeply personal. But she doesn’t just sit back and direct - she’s completely hands-on, right down to the practical work and, as you’ll see if you scroll down to the home office section, she has even made her very own desk. This approach links back to her childhood and teenage years when decorating and painting filled much of her spare time. If you check out Katie’s Instagram, you’ll see reels of her stripping out wall panelling and removing radiator covers - complete with drill in hand!

Katie’s favourite flowers are delphiniums, and she’s pictured here styling a gorgeous bunch of summer blooms featuring lisianthus, roses, and waxflowers. She believes that flowers make a room come to life and also advises that you can choose colours that match your room’s aesthetic and furniture. As you scroll down the rest of the article, you’ll notice some form of foliage, branches, trees, flowers, or plants - both real and faux - appear in every room. One of the popular pieces in the online store is her faux olive tree in a gorgeous terracotta pot, ideal for that Mediterranean feel without the hassle, as real olives are notoriously tricky to keep happy indoors.

I asked Katie how she approaches designing a home, and her response perfectly captures her philosophy. “It’s always an evolutionary process for me. For years I keep collecting furniture, antiques, art, and décor until all the pieces come together. I’m always on the hunt to find this one last complementing item. While you certainly never really know where and if you will ever find it, it makes this entire journey just very exciting.”

That insistence on a high level of craftsmanship and quality really matters to Katie, and the proof is simple - she’d happily place every product she sells in her own apartment. She’s also extremely conscious of reducing the environmental footprint through repurposed wood, vintage finds, as well as sustainable production and transportation. As Katie stresses, “I'm uncompromising when it comes to sustainability and quality."

A few styling tips from Katie

  • Start with natural materials. Wood, linen, stone, and ceramics instantly create warmth and depth in a space.

  • Work with different heights when styling surfaces. Combining taller elements, such as branches or lamps, with smaller objects adds balance.

  • Keep colour palettes calm and cohesive. A neutral base allows textures and materials to stand out.

  • Add something organic. Flowers, branches, or a small tree bring life and softness to interiors.

So now we’ve found out a little bit more about Katie, let’s dive in and take a tour around her home filled with her stunning pieces of furniture, lighting, and the kind of home décor that will make you want to style every surface in your home.

SPECTACULAR SEATING AREAS

Combining atmospheric styling with spatial clarity, Katie creates rooms - like her living room pictured here - that feel relaxed yet elegant. Her interiors are beautifully layered and rich with texture, like the soft bouclé chair, the tactile wool rug, and the characterful wood coffee table in the image.

And when it comes to colour, Katie keeps things calm and neutral. As she explains, “I like my interiors to feel timeless, effortless, and chic – and these are all the things you can easily achieve with neutral tones.” But she also advises that if you are opting for a neutral palette, you need to keep a few things in mind: “When designing without colour, remember that a room can easily feel boring or flat if it misses contrast or texture.”

What I love about Katie’s home is how she’s intentionally created two seating areas within the same vista. The rugs are used to demarcate each zone - they bring definition and warmth to the space. Katie has chosen rugs that are large enough for the sofas to sit on, so they anchor the furniture and complement the original beech parquet flooring. She’s also added that all-important statement piece to each area in the shape of two stunning Murano glass chandeliers.

Katie on following trends:

“Always try to keep adding some pieces that you have a true connection to, and avoid trendy products as best as you can. Trends disappear within months or years, but something that you truly love stays with you for decades.”

STYLED COFFEE TABLE

Katie’s styling skills are second to none, creating a warm, lived-in authentic vibe that is also beautifully considered. She’ll casually pop a dish on top of a stack of hardback books or style oversized branches or seasonal blooms in sculptural vases - details that make a room look personal but also finished.

I asked Katie how she approaches styling a coffee table. “It’s the focal point of your living room. Whether you’re catching up on family updates or enjoying a film, everyone will end up using it,” she explains. “Having said that, it can’t look too pristine or so cluttered that there’s no space left for mail, documents or afternoon tea. Instead, you want to go for a beautiful yet practical aesthetic.”

The coffee table in Katie’s living room is handcrafted from natural, aged elm and it's the imperfections, such as the dents, markings and visible knots, that bring character to the room. It is the perfect base for the pieces she styles on top, including her sculptural marble bowl and an antique vase brimming with a generous bunch of tulips. The rectangular shape and authentic charm make the table a luxurious addition that works in all types of interiors, from classic to contemporary.

Katie on coffee table styling:

“Styling a coffee table can be done in a hundred different ways. However, once you look at the number of coffee table styles on Pinterest or Instagram, you’ll start to notice a few similarities. Overall, you need to add flowers and candles that match your room’s aesthetic. Include some decorative objects like souvenirs or books that highlight your interests.”

STYLISH RETREAT BATHROOM

The bathroom forms part of the home’s original architecture, which Katie chose to preserve rather than redesign. By introducing a few selected pieces to soften the graphic tiled surfaces, she’s transformed it into an elegant retreat. Alongside flowers and foliage, she’s added natural texture and a sense of quiet comfort, including a soft modern rug and round upholstered ottoman, ideal for keeping books or magazines within easy reach when soaking in the bath.

As with all her rooms, flowers and greenery are a key part of the look. She has a tall tree-like plant in a terracotta pot, while one of her rustic stools displays a scented candle and a vase filled with fresh daisies. Whether placed in a kitchen entryway, bedroom or living room, the wooden stool is a timeless piece that blends effortlessly with different styles, creating a calm and balanced feel wherever you put it. I also have one I bought in the Netherlands which currently sits in my kitchen, bringing a rustic touch into a contemporary setting.

DINING IN STYLE

For the dining room, with its beautiful arched window, Katie wanted to create a warm and inviting space centred around natural materials. The chairs are from Kave Home, while a faux plant from Katie’s collection adds a sculptural, organic element that softens the room's architecture. A large neutral-toned rug anchors the dining area, which includes a set of contemporary curved dining chairs she bought from Kave Home, together with a large custom-made wood table. She’s kept the tabletop styled simply with an antique vase displaying daisies and two wrought iron candle holders that look perfect left in place either with or without table settings. A bespoke tall wooden dresser adds a classic touch, yet still pairs well with the rest of the furniture.

Throughout her home, Katie’s colour palette leans into off-white, so she opts for light beige and grey tones, such as Skimming Stone by Farrow & Ball. And with the Pantone Colour of the Year 2026 being an off-white, I asked Katie how she feels about using it in interiors. “Off-white works so beautifully because it’s timeless,” explains Katie. “Trends come and go, but soft neutrals always feel elegant and effortless, no matter the season.” To read more ideas on styling and decorating with off-white, check out my blog post on the Pantone Colour of the Year.

CAREFULLY CURATED SHELVING

This is where Katie’s home décor is showcased so clearly, styled alongside large-format white hardback books and earthy-toned candlesticks. Notice how she doesn't overcrowd the shelves, allowing each piece displayed to be a focal point. When styling surfaces, and especially shelves, negative (empty) space is just as important as the objects themselves, and it’s what makes each object feel intentional, not cluttered. So, ensure you allow plenty of space between objects to allow them to shine.

To add interest to the stack of books, Katie topped them with a marble vessel, while on the single AD book she has placed one of her dishes - a simple styling detail that makes the display feel more lived-in. In between the books sits one of her unique travertine pieces, a true statement piece, and right at the bottom, two antique pots add depth and contrast to the shelving.

STUNNING HOME OFFICE

This newly designed home office really has the wow factor and it starts with the stunning statement desk which Katie designed and built herself. She enjoys occasionally creating furniture pieces for her own home, especially when she has a very specific idea for a room. The desk's curved shape creates a sculptural focal point in the office while keeping the overall space simple and functional. Its warm amber tone was chosen to complement the original 1930s beech parquet of the house, whose natural colour already brings a lot of warmth to the room. The desk was stained in several layers and finished by hand with shellac, giving the surface depth and a richly polished look.

Paired with a bouclé curved pouffe and soft off-white rug, Katie’s created a dream workspace - one that you’d never want to leave. Other key design features in the room include the beautiful panelled walls and soft floaty linen curtains. Notice how the black wrought iron poles are positioned as high as possible to give the space a real sense of height. For those all-important finishing touches, she’s placed earthy-toned vessels to add depth and contrast.

In one of her aged pots, Katie’s styled a large display of blossom on a white plinth - a very European way of displaying sculptures, vases, lamps and home decor for years, and one that’s now making its way into more homes across the globe. A plinth instantly showcases an object, giving it height, presence and that gallery moment. You might also hear it referred to as a pedestal, base or stand. I love the look of a plinth, so I bought a grey concrete one in the Netherlands a few years back which now sits in my entryway proudly displaying a large plant.

CALM, SERENE BEDROOM

The bedroom has that grounded, serene feel to it and is beautifully layered with texture - starting with the rustic wooden bench made from old elm wood, which instantly brings nature and character to the space. To add freshness, Katie introduces greenery in the form of a large tree-like plant in an antique terracotta pot. Other rustic touches, like the lamp from her collection and a woven basket, show the visible traces of time, which lend a warm, inviting atmosphere to the bedroom.

For the bed, Katie has kept things effortlessly calm and relaxed with gorgeous soft white in a linen-cotton mix with a crinkled effect - a nice alternative to the popular washed crumpled linen. She has dressed the bed with an earthy-toned throw and cushion in tones which tie in nicely with the warm hues of the wood and terracotta.

STYLING WITH ANTIQUE VESSELS AND LAMPS

Vases and vessels are a key home-décor styling piece both in Katie’s home and her collection. You’ll spot at least one in every room filled with some form of flowers or foliage - like the delicate grasses pictured here - large branches of blossom, or stems of carefully chosen blooms.

Katie has a passion for collecting vases. “I collect them from all eras and continents. Marble vases from the 1920s or in the pre-Columbian style by Simone Bodmer-Turner,” says Katie. “I also inherited a heavy, gold glass vase with a silver rim, shaped like a pineapple, from my grandparents.”

The Mijiu vessel pictured here in Katie’s living room is a clay vessel over 100 years old, distinguished by its unmistakable character. Features like its original patina and strong, reduced form are also part of its history and make it truly one of a kind. She has styled the vase with two sleek black iron candle holders on one side of the table, and a book topped with a white ceramic dish on the other.

One of Katie’s true staple pieces - both in her store and as a styling hero in her home - is the clay pot antique lamp base, some of which are up to 120 years old. Each one has its own beautiful patina and is completely unique, with subtle tonal variations which show the individuality of every piece. The lamp pictured here is finished with a shade made from Belgian linen, and when lit, adds that soft, warm glow.

Katie on styling vases:

“Whether styled as a single statement piece or arranged in pairs, a vase brings a unique sense of atmosphere and depth to any space.”

STYLING A VINTAGE MIX ON A RISER

Another brilliant styling piece is a riser - adding interest and the natural texture of aged wood - to a table or kitchen worktop. Katie uses hers, pictured here, to elevate everyday essentials on the kitchen countertop, making the surface feel more pulled together. With its beautifully unique grain, the wood adds warmth and texture to a kitchen, bathroom, or living space, and the subtle marks of time only enhance its authentic charm.

A riser, like this one, works just as well in the bathroom for soap dispensers, scented candles, and other decorative accents. The slightly raised design creates a sense of order on other surfaces like a dining table or coffee table. Here, Katie has styled her riser with vintage brass salt and pepper grinders, a porcelain trinket box, and an antique vase filled with lavender.
