Stylish Dog Beds that Complement your Interior

Gone are the days when dog beds were simply plain, synthetic rectangular cushions from the local pet store. Today, home stores and high-end designers are creating dog beds that are every bit as stylish as the rest of our furnishings. With names like Versace, Gucci and Armani offering their own designs, a dog bed can become a real statement piece in your home. While our dogs are perfectly happy with a soft and cosy bed, we are often looking for something that works visually too, requiring their beds to blend into our interior scheme rather than standing out as a dull, dog hair-coated cushion for all the wrong reasons.
Take the kilim design from Weaver Green, pictured above. This is a bed you will want on show in your living room, not hidden by the back door or in the utility room. It is as practical as it is beautiful. Hand-woven from recycled yarn, the fabric has the look and feel of natural wool while also being hard-wearing, paw-friendly, suitable for indoor and outdoor use and, importantly, machine washable.
With International Dog Day taking place on 26 August, and with two adorable golden retrievers of my own who could do with new beds, I decided to research the options available. I was surprised by how many designers and online stores have included a dog bed as part of their furniture or soft-furnishings collections. There are so many to choose from and, whether your interior is contemporary, traditional, country or any other style, there is a dog bed to suit every scheme and every budget. You can also use alternative ideas for dog beds, such as a pouffe, blanket or bean bag or, like in the image here, build a custom-made area for your dog.
Having had many different types of dog beds, I have a good idea of what works for my dogs. This is a raised, soft bed with a removable cushion, which is useful during the warmer months, while in the winter they like being cocooned in soft, furry fabric. The size of the dog bed you choose is important, and I believe dogs need a bed large enough for them to spread out. But there are also many other elements to consider, so before showing you a whole variety of dog beds, I’ve written a list of the key factors to look for.
What to look for when buying a dog bed
SIZE - Ensure you choose the correct size for your dog’s breed and sleeping style, so they have enough room to spread out if they want to.
WASHABLE - Check whether the bed has a removable cover for washing or whether the entire bed is machine washable.
SPACE - Consider which room the dog bed will be placed in and how it will work in the space.
RAISED - Choose a bed with a pillow or raised sides for dogs who like to rest their heads.
LOW BED - If your dog is older or has arthritis, opt for a lower bed to prevent them from struggling to get in and out.
MATERIAL - Ideally, choose a cushion with antimicrobial properties. A bed with memory foam is an option; just as it does for humans, it supports their weight and gently moulds to their body shape.
CLIMATE - Think about your climate or the temperature of the room where your dog will sleep when choosing a bed. A bed made from fleece could be too hot in warm weather, so have an alternative, or place a cotton sheet over the fleece.
DESIGN - Style-wise, you can choose a design that works with your interior, such as a neutral bed for the Scandinavian look or rattan for a relaxed, coastal vibe.
COLOUR - When choosing a colour, look for shades that go with your interior scheme like in the image above, where the saffron tones in the bed echo the colour of the cupboard.
Dog bed designs

There are so many different designs, from a dog sofa to a rattan basket. Pictured here is a snuggle bed by Charley Chau, which is not only stylish in colour and shape but luxurious too, with a deep-filled luxury mattress and stitched-in blanket lined with an exclusive faux-fur fleece. It goes that extra mile and is designed for dogs who love to burrow and sleep under blankets.

Floor cushion — A low-profile option that blends easily into most interiors and doesn’t have to specifically be a dog bed.
Rectangular dog bed - This is one of the most popular shaped dog beds and is easy to move around.
Rattan dog house — A covered woven bed in the shape of a house.
Dog sofa — A furniture-inspired bed crafted in the shape of a sofa.
Antique-style bed — A wooden design in the style of a traditional French bed.
Raised rattan basket — A stylish raised bed that works indoors or outdoors.
Designer dog beds

I visited WOW!house in June and, as I walked through the different rooms, I spotted several bespoke dog beds that had been incorporated into the design of the spaces especially for our four-legged friends. In the morning room pictured here, designer Sara Cosgrove has used Cameron Chambray wallcovering by room sponsor Phillip Jeffries to create an understated custom-made dog bed that doubles up as a side table. Rattan beds are particularly popular as this material has become an interior-design staple both inside our homes and on our terraces. While often associated with coastal style or a relaxed beach vibe, rattan works well with many different interior schemes.
This particular rattan basket bed by OKA is raised off the floor to help protect your dog from draughts. It also has handles, making it easier to move around or take outside. The shower-resistant and anti-mildew cushion blends practicality with style, while the design is smart enough to use both indoors and on the terrace as part of a stylish seating area.

I must admit that I have my eye on this bed for my dogs. Furniture brand Loaf has realised that dogs deserve beds every bit as stylish as ours and, although it’s their first-ever dog bed, it seems that they have got it right. The sides are raised, but not so high that the dog could struggle to get in and out. I particularly like the ticking-style stripe, which is a modern classic. It comes with plump, comfy cushions, practical handles and, best of all, removable covers.
I have struggled in the past with dog beds whose covers cannot be removed but are too large to fit in the washing machine. When I ask the dry cleaners, they say that they don’t dry-clean or wash them. So, for me, removable covers are a real bonus.
Luxury dog daybed

Dogs love to sprawl out and rest their heads on a pillow, just as we do. So what could be better for them than a dog day bed? The Charley Chau dog bed memory foam mattress has been designed to provide lasting comfort and support.

Window-seat — If it’s low, this can be a perfect spot for a dog to rest and watch the world go by.
Low upholstered ottoman or stool — A raised option that feels more like part of the furniture.
Large beanbag —A large bean bag can act as a cosy place for your dog.
Cot mattress - this is ideal for large dogs to sprawl out on.
